Cost and buying
Same limits, same deductibles, same drivers — or the comparison is meaningless
Comparison is only useful when you are comparing the same thing. Before you request a single quote, write down the coverages, limits, and deductibles you want, and then hold every carrier to that identical specification.
Decide your liability limits, whether you want UM/UIM at matching limits, your collision and comprehensive deductibles, and any add-ons. Record the vehicles, the exact garaging address, every household driver, and realistic annual mileage.
Quote directly with several carriers, and separately with an independent agent who represents multiple insurers. The two channels reach different markets, and a carrier that is uncompetitive in one state can be the cheapest in the next.
Aim for at least four quotes. Below that, you have no reliable sense of the market.
Convert everything to the same period. Add instalment fees, policy fees, and any membership charges. Then check the differences that price alone hides: how claims are filed, whether original manufacturer parts are guaranteed, whether a rental is included, and how the carrier is rated for claims service and complaints in your state.
Start the new policy before the old one ends, then cancel the old one in writing and request the pro-rata refund. Never allow even one uninsured day between policies.
